Student Organization Wins National Award

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Aug. 15, 2019 — West Liberty University’s Beta Beta chapter of Kappa Phi Club was awarded a big prize this summer at the gathering of the National Council of Chapters when it was presented with the LeSourd Cup.

“The LeSourd Cup is considered the largest national award and we are very proud of our students,” said Kate Billings, director of Student Activities who oversees all student clubs and sororities.

The LeSourd Cup is awarded to the chapter that has demonstrated the most improvement, particularly in the areas of growth and development, according to Kappa Phi (kappaphi.org).

Larrin Shriver who served as club president this past year, accepted the award on behalf of the chapter this past summer at their national meeting, held at Oklahoma State University. Shriver is an Elementary Education major, with a minor in Special Educatioin K-6 and Early Education. Shriver is from Lost Creek, W.Va.

Incoming president Samantha Shipley takes on the Kappa Phi presidency at WLU this fall and the staff advisor is Debra Dague.

A Christ-centered organization for university women, Kappa Phi gives college and university women an opportunity for a deeper understanding of God, others and self; to realize their individual potential; to be a supportive community; to be personally involved, active participants and leaders in the life of the Church; to commit themselves to positive action.

WLU has a variety of student clubs including 10 Greek organizations on campus, with approximately 250 students paying dues. The national sororities and fraternities include Chi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, Phi Delta Theta and Theta Xi. The remaining organizations are local sororities and fraternities, including the sororities Delta Theta Kappa, Lambda Psi Sigma and Beta Rho Epsilon. Fraternities on campus are Chi Nu, Kappa Delta Kappa, and Beta Theta Gamma.
