WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 11, 2022 — For several years now, the College of Sciences has offered a popular outreach to area high school students and prospective students.

Referred to as SCIFI (Science Classes I Find Interesting), the informative campus visit took place on April 7 in the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences, Arnett Hall of Natural Science and Main Hall. It offered high school students a chance to take a college course or two and experience the thrill of science learning.
“The SCIFI Day was a big success once again and helped us to share the great programs that the College of Sciences offers for students interested in pursuing careers in the Health Sciences, biology, chemistry, zoo science and more,” said Dr. Deanna Schmitt, who coordinated the annual day-long event.
At total of 180 students from the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia and Eastern Ohio attended the event.

The schedule offered students sample classes on various topics, admissions information and tours, and lunch.
The sample classes included topics on psychology, nursing, dental hygiene, biology, ecology, zoo science, microbiology and chemistry. Students may choose two classes that interest them. For example, visiting the nursing simulation lab for hands-on learning, or taking a class in the zoo science program and handling real animals housed in the Arnett Hall of Sciences labs.
“We are so pleased that area students joined us and took advantage of a close-up look at what it’s like to be a science major and how West Liberty University can help,” Schmitt said. “It’s a lot of fun for the students (and us) but it’s also a smart way to explore the university and its programs.”
West Liberty University’s College of Sciences is led by Dean Dr. Karen Kettler. It prides itself on its student-focused teaching, learning and research environment dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. For details, please visit westliberty.edu/college-of-sciences.
