Retirees Rack Up 169 Years of Service

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 24, 2021 — West Liberty University is congratulating six employees this spring as they reach their date for retirement.

“We congratulate our retirees and wish them well as they begin the next chapter of their lives. We are especially grateful this year as our campus met the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Diana Harto, WLU’s Chief Human Resources Officer.

Paula Tomasik

Retirees, dates of retirement and titles include:

Paula Tomasik of Wheeling retired on April 30, after 35 years of service. Most recently, Tomasik served as the Director of University Effectiveness and Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Liaison. Previously, she served as the coordinator of Institutional Research and Assessment, a project coordinator, an administrative secretary and a secretary. She is a graduate of WLU and earned a bachelor’s of arts in 1991.

Dr. Brian Crawford

Dr. Brian Crawford of Wheeling retired on May 21, after 22 years of service. Most recently, Crawford served as provost. In 2014 he served as acting president for three months. Prior to that he was Dean of Liberal Arts and before that he was the chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Crawford also taught geography at WLU in various capacities since August 1999. Crawford earned his Bachelor of Arts in Geography at Indiana University of PA, his Master of Science in Earth Science at California University of PA and his Doctorate in Physical Geography at Indiana State University.

Mark Pissos

Dr. William Wagener of Monroeville, Pa. retires on May 31, after 27 years of service. He was a professor and the program director for the Medical Laboratory Science degree program. Wagener is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Hospital (Penn.) School of Medical Technology. He received both a Master of Science degree and a doctoral degree in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health.

Mark Pissos of Wheeling retires on June 30, after 18 years of service. He most recently was an instructor of Computer Information Systems. He served on a variety of university committees over the years including those on technology and the West College of Business curriculum and assessment committees. Pissos earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from West Liberty and an MBA at West Virginia University.

Beth Barr

Beth Barr of Wellsburg retires on July 30, after 44 years of service. Barr joined the staff on July 1, 1977 and began as a secretary in the Alumni, College Relations and Sports Information. She then went on to a position in Business Office working with accounts payable and then on to payroll representative. Barr is a graduate of West Liberty and earned a Bachelor of Science in business degree in 1997.

David Dewitt

David Dewitt of Wellsburg retires on July 30, after 23 years of service. He performed the duties of Academic Laboratory Instructing Assistant in the chemistry department. Dewitt earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at WLU in 1981 and completed all courses for the West Virginia teaching certification in chemistry for grades 5 – adult and for grades 9 – adult.
