Result of Oct. 13, 2021 Board of Governors Meeting

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Oct. 13, 2021 — The West Liberty University Board of Governors met today in Shaw Hall for its regularly scheduled 4 p.m. meeting. After a call to order, roll call and a statement of the university mission, the meeting began. For those not attending in person, a Zoom link was provided.

The board welcomed one new member, alumnus Thomas Cervone of Knoxville, Tenn.

A special presentation by Chris Wade of CMTA Energy Solutions followed. Wade described the energy savings that the university can expect with the recent campus-wide updates.

Minutes of the Aug. 18 full Board of Governors meeting and minutes of the Sept. 29 Executive Committee were approved unanimously.

The Board had no action items.

The President gave his report and this was followed by reports from President Cabinet members Provost Bonnie Suderman and Vice President of Enrollment Scott Cook. Following these, Staff Representative Ryan Glanville gave his report. 

Next to report was Faculty Representative Jason Metz who mentioned recent faculty discussions and actions in regards to President Evans and his lack of attribution in speeches. Metz also revealed the results of a survey asking all faculty (145) to respond to four specific questions in regards to this matter. He reported that the response rate was 66 percent.

Student Representative Mackenzi Jones was unable to attend the meeting but provided her report, which was read by Chairman Rich Lucas. Ending these reports was WLU Foundation Executive Director Angie Zambito-Hill, followed by a Financial Report by Vice President of Fiscal Affairs Lori Hudson.

Executive Session was then called and the board left the room to attend this session.

After returning from Executive Session, the board reconvened at 6:28 p.m. It took no formal action. The board referred the matter to WLU’s Human Resources Department.

“Human Resources will provide the Board of Governors with all pertinent materials and answer any questions the board may have. Human Resources will come back to the board and the Board of Governors will make the final decision. The Board of Governors will reconvene to make the final decision after proper notice and time frames following Freedom of Information Act requirements and West Virginia HEPC regulations,” said Rich Lucas, chairman of the board.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of WLU’s Board of Governors takes place at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021 in Shaw Hall (second floor).

Created by the West Virginia Legislature as WLU’s governing body, the board consists of nine members appointed by the Governor of West Virginia and three elected representatives by students, faculty, and staff.

The board is the principal policy-making and advisory body on all matters relating to, and affecting the university’s mission.
