Presidential Search Committee Meets as Application Deadline Ends

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., March 20, 2023 — West Liberty University’s Presidential Search Committee met at 6 p.m. today with AGB Search via Zoom as it continued progress on the 2023 Presidential Search for WLU’s 38th president.

AGB Consultants Jerome Gilbert and Richard Wueste are leading the presidential search efforts as paid consultants. The closing date for applications just passed on Friday, March 17. Prior to that, the consultants completed January “listening sessions” with WLU stakeholders, then approved and coordinated advertising efforts to promote the position.

Today’s meeting focused on reviewing the 59 applicants who applied for the position and determining next steps.

Search Committee Chairman Thomas Cervone called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. with a roll call. In attendance were: Jack Adams, Michael Baker, Keith Bell, Sydney Burkle, Richard Carter, Katie Cooper, John Dolan, Jamie Evick, Ryan Glanville, Dan Joseph, Karen Kettler, Richard Lucas, David McKinley, Jason Metz, Stephanie Shaw and Tasha Taylor. Arlene Brantley was unable to attend.

Pursuant to WV Code § 6-9A-4, at 6:05 p.m., a motion to retire to executive session was made by David McKinley and seconded by Richard Carter; motion passed unanimously.

A motion to rise from executive session at 6:59 p.m. was made by Rich Lucas and seconded by David McKinley; by unanimous approval, the Board rose from executive session.

There were no actions emanating from Executive Session.

According to the meeting minutes, semi-finalist interviews are proposed to take place via Zoom on April 3-4, 2023. Questions for the semi-finalists were developed during today’s meeting.

The Search Committee will meet with AGB from 1 – 4 p.m., on Thursday, March 23 to select the semi-finalists to interview. (NOTE: this March 23 meeting was brief and moved to Sunday, March 26.)

On motion by David McKinley and seconded by Dan Joseph the March 20 meeting adjourned at 7:02 p.m.

On Sunday, March 26 the Search Committee convened again and this is the result:

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., March 27, 2023 — West Liberty University’s Presidential Search Committee met at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 26 with AGB Search via Zoom and narrowed the field of candidates seeking to become WLU’s 38th president.

The closing date for applications passed on Friday, March 17 and a total of 59 applicants applied for the position, according to search committee minutes.

Search Committee Chairman Thomas Cervone called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. with a roll call. In attendance were: Jack Adams, Michael Baker, Keith Bell, Sydney Burkle, Richard Carter, Katie Cooper, Thomas Cervone, John Dolan, Ryan Glanville, Dan Joseph, Karen Kettler, Richard Lucas, David McKinley, Jason Metz and Tasha Taylor, along with AGB Consultants Jerome Gilbert and Richard Wueste.

Unable to attend were Arlene Brantley, Jamie Evick and Stephanie Shaw.

Discussions of the 59 applicants ensued and nine semi-finalists were identified. Candidates will be contacted for interviews April 3-4, 2023 via Zoom.

The meeting adjourned at 8:58 p.m.

Also serving as search committee members are: Katie Cooper, assistant vice president of Enrollment Management; John Dolan, alumnus and member of the WLU Foundation Board; Dr. Daniel “Dan” Joseph, alumnus and member of the WLU Foundation Board; Dr. Karen Kettler, dean of the College of Sciences and Tasha Taylor, executive assistant to the provost.
