West Liberty University Celebrates Presidential Inauguration

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.,  April 5, 2024 — West Liberty University formally installed Dr. Tim Borchers as President in a ceremony Friday afternoon in the Academics, Sport, and Recreation Complex (ASRC) at West Liberty University.

The theme for the Inauguration was the “Power of Aspiration.” In his inaugural address, Dr. Borchers explained that the concept of aspirations was favored by students as part of the University’s new marketing campaign.

“I think the theme of aspirations—and hope—captures this moment in time for West Liberty today,” Dr. Borchers said in his address.

In his remarks, Dr. Borchers focused on the University’s role in providing access and opportunity, economic opportunity, and experiential learning.

“Providing an affordable education is a top priority of the University and we have worked to keep costs low for our students relative to the experience they receive,” he said. “We will partner with community businesses to develop, promote, and support internships, apprenticeships, and entry-level career opportunities for our students in the community.”

Borchers also announced several new initiatives including an employee leadership development program to start Fall 2024. He also announced that The Aspire Fund has been established with the West Liberty Foundation to support student experiential learning.

Tom Cervone, Secretary of the Board of Governors, presided over the ceremony. David McKinley, Board of Governors chair, formally installed Borchers as president.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito provided a video welcome and Roseann Ferro and Mary Jo Guidi from Senator Joe Manchin’s office spoke on his behalf.

Governor James Justice provided a proclamation that declared, in part, “I commend the entire WLU community for your unwavering support and commitment to fostering and environment where students can thrive and excel.”

The weeklong celebration began on Thursday, April 4 with campus open houses, a Nutting Gallery Art Exhibition opening, the Hughes Lecture Series and the opening night of the Hilltop Players production of Puffs.

Events continue through the next five days with a 5K run/walk on Saturday, free organ concert Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel, a solar eclipse viewing event on Monday and alumni events on Tuesday. The 8th Annual Topper Day of Giving is Wednesday, April 10. A complete Inauguration schedule can be found at westliberty.edu/inauguration.

Dr. Borchers previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Peru State College and Dean and faculty at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He began as West Liberty’s President on July 1, 2023.
