WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Dec. 1, 2015 — Six seniors will be displaying their work in the Fall Senior Exhibition at the Nutting Gallery. Seniors Ruthanne “Brook” Green, Maquel McCullough, Peyton Miller, Eileen Thompson, Joshua Verhovec and Mario Yacoviello also will be on hand to greet guests at the opening that takes place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2.

“The senior shows are always special. The students work hard, struggle and pull it together. It’s a very rigorous process but the result is dramatic. Please join us for the opening,” said Assistant Professor of Art Robert Villamagna, who is the director of the Nutting Gallery.

Mad Libs are the subject of XXX artwork.
Mad Libs are the subject of Eileen Thompson’s  artwork.

Video games, the Wizard of Oz, weddings, typography and military families are some of the topics displayed in the art.

According to Thompson who used typography and came up with a dozen or more colorful Mad Libs. She wanted to “create a visual form of entertainment — original typography based illustrations that entertain.” The result is an advertisers’ dream.

Maquel McCullough’s work evokes video game characters.

Verhovec created half a dozen bright large canvases showing portraits of people he knows for his submission. “Within my work is a recurring theme of clean lines and strong colors. I created this series of portraits of a few people who have pushed me along as I evolve my artistic style.”

Using a variety of materials and processes in each piece of art, all the students share what they’ve learned in class and their artistic vision.

The senior exhibition remains on display through Friday, Dec. 11. Commencement is Dec. 12.

Located in Hall of Fine Arts, the Nutting Gallery is dedicated to educating, enriching and engaging students and the public through art exhibitions of the highest quality and to promoting the visual arts within the WLU community.
