WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., August 28, 2023 — West Liberty University invites art enthusiasts to the first gallery opening of the academic season as the Nutting Gallery welcomes mixed media artist Georgia Tambasis of Wheeling, West Virginia.

“Compass, It’s Not an Easy Voyage” opens Wednesday, August 30th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with an exhibition opening that includes a question and answer session with the artist at 6 p.m. The exhibition continues through September 21st and is open to the public and free to attend.

“What fascinates me about Georgia’s art is the play between the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work. In this body of work you see an artist thinking and developing over a twenty-year span while staying true to a personal vision,” said Professor Brian Fencl, faculty member and director of the Nutting Gallery.

Georgia Tambasis says, “Reflecting on my art and on how I work, I find that when I listen to my inner compass and make the work that I want to make the work flows more easily. But this voyage of listening to yourself is not easy, it takes consistent practice and reflection. Compass: It’s not an easy voyage encompassing selected work of different media from various stages in my art career.”

Georgia earned a M.F.A. in ceramics/sculpture, from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a B.F.A., from Youngstown State University, Youngstown. She is also currently exhibiting with Robyn Mass at Summit Art Gallery, Weirton, WV.

G. Ogden Nutting, whose family the gallery is named after, passed away on Friday, August 25th at the age of 87. Fencl reflects on Nutting’s support adding, “We are grateful for the Nutting family and appreciate the support they have shown the arts at West Liberty University. The remodel of the gallery has made a huge impact on our programming and the types of artists we are able to bring to campus. Even though the remodel was over ten years ago the Nutting Gallery is still one of the nicest art exhibition spaces in the State of WV.”

The Nutting Gallery is dedicated to educating, enriching, and engaging students and the public through art exhibitions of the highest quality. Fulfilling this mission through exhibitions during the academic year, the schedule includes exhibitions by visiting artists, two Senior Exhibitions, and the Annual Art Faculty Exhibition.

Located in WLU’s Fine Arts Building, the regular hours of the Nutting Gallery are 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Fridays, weekends, and other times are by arrangement only.
