WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 16, 2023 — West Liberty University’s Student Government Association (SGA) leaders for 2023 – 2024 were sworn in recently by Executive Director of Housing and Student Life Marcella Snyder. The brief ceremony took place during Honors Convocation.

President Jenna Maguire is an incoming sophomore from Wheeling, W.Va. She is a double major in Media Communications and Rhetoric and Writing. Maguire is a WLU Honors College member and worked with The Trumpet, the student newspaper, her first semester. She is the daughter of William and Brandy Maguire, both of Wheeling.

New SGA Officers for 2023 – 2024 include Derek Roehner and Jenna Maguire.

She looks forward to the year ahead. “Last year’s (SGA) team did a really good job of building relationships between faculty and staff. I want to expand that to our students. I want to have meetings with our clubs and groups on campus and work together with them for planning activities to better our student experience,” she said.

Maguire and Roehner’s campaign slogan was dubbed the “B Initiative: Bring Involvement, Build Culture and Break Barriers.”

In her role as Student Government President Maguire will be a member of the WLU Board of Governors, which adds professional experience to a student’s resumé and involves them in university governance.

“I’m excited to be that student voice and represent our student body, especially with our change of leadership and a new president.” WLU announced its 38th President, Dr. Tim Borchers, just a few days ago and he will take office on July 1, 2023.

Maguire’s career goal is in the field of public relations and communications.

SGA Vice President Derek Roehner is from Weston, Fla. and is a double major in marketing and management. A co-captain of the men’s tennis team, Roehner was the former treasurer during the previous academic year. Roehner is also active on campus as a hall director for housing and residence residence life. He is the son of Rob and Maria Roehner of Weston, Fla.

Roehner is poised to make an impact on campus and develop culture throughout the Hilltop.

“As the student body vice president, I am thrilled to work alongside Jenna and continue to build culture and bring involvement for the students at West Liberty. I am looking forward to continuing the relationships with staff and faculty as well as creating a more well-rounded campus for not only students to enjoy but to have the full college experience that they deserve.”

Roehner’s future goals are to earn an MBA post-graduation as well as to continue his involvement in tennis as a graduate assistant.

Other SGA officers elected and confirmed for 2023 – 2024 include:

Secretary Sydney Wedeven, Treasurer Ishika Agarwal and Programming Director Audrie Shreve. Senators will be elected in September when the students return to campus for the 2022 – 2023 academic year.

SGA continually works with administrators and acts as bridges of communication between students and administration. SGA also develops creative programming for students to keep the student experience the best it can possibly be.

The association governs itself on three overarching principles: service, leadership and integrity. Its office is located on the second floor of the College Union building.
