New Scholarship Honors Professor Charles Davis

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Feb. 17, 2016 — West Liberty University Foundation recently announced the establishment of a new scholarship for business students, the Professor Charles B. Davis Jr. Memorial Scholarship.

A 35-year employee of WLU and an alumnus, Davis served as a physics teacher from 1967-1998. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Panhandle Farmers Mutual Insurance Company.

“We are very grateful to the Board of Directors of the Panhandle Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for remembering Professor Davis in this manner. For 31 years he played a major role in the insurance company and this gift, spurred by his work, will now assist our students to earn a college degree,” said Christine Carder, executive director of the WLU Foundation.

A resident of Wheeling, Davis passed away at home on Jan. 7, 2016.

“This scholarship was established to honor a long-serving member of our Board of Directors. His insight and work played a major role in the progress of Panhandle Farmers Mutual,” said President Art Meadows, CEO of Panhandle Farmers Mutual Insurance, headquartered in Moundsville.

The company was formed in 1898 and has insured property in West Virginia since that time. Davis, who was raised on a dairy farm, was a native of Weirton, W.Va. He is survived by his wife, Madona; son, Jeffrey Davis; daughter, Mary Jo Headley; daughter-in-law, Beth Davis; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Beverly King. The initial amount of the gift is $3,000 and it will continue to be supported by the insurance company. Two scholarships will be awarded annually to the rising sophomore and junior finance major with the highest GPA and enrolled in the Gary E. West College of Business. The first awards will be made in Fall 2016.
