WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Feb. 19, 2019 — Associate Professor of Music Dr. Anna Stephen-Robinson recently published an essay in the 2019 issue of the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal that focuses on teaching music theory.
In her article, “The Mini-lesson: Active Learning and Engagement in the Undergraduate Classroom,” Stephan-Robinson explains an assignment that she has developed over the last few years, and advocates for colleagues nationwide to try similar teaching techniques in their own classes.
Mini-lessons help students understand the relevance of music theory classes and give them valuable experience in public speaking, according to Stephan-Robinson. The article also includes a sample student analysis by Robert Moore, a music education major, who recorded a short video to supplement his analysis.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Stephan-Robinson holds Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., a Master of Music degree in Horn Performance from the University of Georgia (Athens), and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music, City University of New York.
Prior to her appointment at WLU, she taught at Ithaca College, NYU, Wagner College, the Eastman School of Music and the University of Georgia, as well as in public schools in Long Island, N.Y.
Since fall of 2011, Stephen-Robinson teaches music theory, ear training and horn here on the Hilltop.
