WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 7, 2015 — West Liberty University recently inducted three new members into its Liber Society at an 8 a.m. breakfast held in Liberty Oaks Alumni House.

Jillian M. Laslo, Nicole Sadecky and Rachel Wurster were selected to join the women’s honor society on April 17.

Laslo is from Shadyside, Ohio and is a biology, pre-med major. She is a rising senior with plans to become a Physician Assistant (PA) after college.

Sadecky is from Ravenswood, W.Va. and is an ecology and evolution biology major who also is a rising senior. She performs research in the lab of 2014 West Virginia Professor of the Year Dr. Zachary Loughman on a Bucks-for-Brains Fellowship.

Wurster is from Berkley Springs, W.Va. and is a secondary English education major with a teaching English as a second language minor. She is a member of the Alpha Chi National honorary and also is a rising senior.

The Liber Society was created to serve as the women’s highest ranking honorary society and its founding precepts are rooted in the Order of the Torch founded in 1932 as the men’s honorary society.

Coordinators for the Liber Society were Dental Hygiene Director Margaret Six and Professor Courtney Huffman, both faculty at West Liberty University’s Sarah Whitaker Glass School of Dental Hygiene.

“Membership in the society recognizes excellence. It implies a degree of responsibility and a commitment to the pursuit of knowledge,” according to Six.

Members of the organization include both female members of the faculty and the University’s highest quality female students.

Faculty and students are chosen based upon a demonstration of excellence and leadership in three areas: the classroom (academics); the campus (activities); and the community (service).

The name Liber means book and represents the quest for knowledge. It is also a nod to the prominent book image incorporated into the design of the University’s seal and found on the exterior plaster of Main Hall.
