WEST LIBERTY, W. Va., April 16, 2024 – The West Liberty University Foundation and WLU Athletics welcome area golfers to take part in the 11th annual Lary Loew Hilltopper Golf Scramble on Friday, June 21 at Oglebay’s Palmer Course. This four-person team scramble raises funds to benefit WLU Athletics and honors West Liberty alum Lary Loew.

Loew, a 1975 graduate of WLU and a 2011 Wall of Honor inductee, passed away in 2012. The following year, the annual Hilltopper Athletics Golf Scramble was renamed in Loew’s memory with the support of his three sisters, Brenda Thomas, Sharon Saseen, and Carol Loew.

The three Loew sisters remain at the helm of the employee benefits agency Lary founded – the Cornerstone Group. Since the inception of the Lary Loew Hilltopper Scramble, the Cornerstone Group has served as the event’s title sponsor and Lary’s sisters have volunteered their time to ensure that every golfer has a great day on and off the course.

“Lary was a proud West Liberty alum and playing golf was his favorite pastime, so this is the perfect way to remember him. Over the years, we have been grateful for the WLU alumni and friends of Lary who have supported the event and helped raise funds for WLU Football and Baseball,” said Brenda Thomas.

Proceeds from the Lary Loew Hilltopper Scramble benefit the Robert L. and Nancy C. Loew Memorial Baseball Scholarship and the WLU Football program. To date, the scramble has raised more than $100,000 for WLU Athletics.

“The Lary Loew Scramble is the highlight of the summer for many Hilltoppers,” said Betsy Delk, Executive Director of the WLU Foundation. “Everyone is in a good mood, memories of Lary are circulating among his family and friends, and our alumni are out in full force to support WLU athletics.”

On the day of the event, registration and lunch takes place upon arrival at the Palmer Course, followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. In addition to 18 holes of golf, there will be the traditional on-course games and contests, complimentary drinks (3), and a special West Liberty University gift for all participants. A post-scramble dinner will be held at Hess Shelter in Oglebay Park.

The scramble fee is $500 per four-person team. Event sponsorship packages and tee box sponsorships are available with proceeds benefiting WLU Athletics.
