Hilltop Opera to Perform at Scottish Rite Cathedral

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 3, 2022 — West Liberty University Department of Music and Theater is proud to present an hour-long concert of songs and arias from the American musical theater and traditional opera arias at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, located at 83-14th St., Wheeling.

This historic building is owned by Roxby Development and is currently being restored to its original glory as a Wheeling landmark. (Please see Eric Ayers article published on Oct. 21, 2021 in the Wheeling Intelligencer.)

The performance takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2022 and is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. Linda Cowan, professor of voice and chairperson of the department, the concert features:

The concert also features pianists Deborah Breiding and Dr. Douglas McCall, visiting professor of Music Education and Choirs.

This ensemble previously performed for the Thursday Music Club of Wheeling in March, and at various university functions.  

Arias performed are by famous composers including Puccini, Donizetti, Bizet, Mozart, and Handel, alongside music theater favorites from composers Jason Robert Brown, Stephen Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Alan Menken, David Yazbek, and Anais Mitchell, among others. 

Hilltop Opera is just one performance option for students at WLU. Others include the Marching Hilltoppers, University Singers, Wind Symphony, Community Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Choral Scholars, African Drum and Dance Ensemble, University Band, Steel Band, and Electronic Music Ensemble.

The Division of Music at West Liberty University offers undergraduate degrees in music education, music performance, and music technology. It also offers a minor in music.
