WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., April 4, 2019 — Senior English Literature major Bailee Dugan earned second place honors for the presentation of her scholarly paper at the 2019 West Virginia Undergraduate Literary Symposium on March 23.
“The symposium celebrates student scholarship on topics related to literature and culture and we congratulate Bailee on her fine presentation,” said Dr. Angela Rehbein, associate professor of English.
The symposium is held annually at different institutions around the state and took place at Shepherd University this year.
There were five broad categories in which students could compete, including Shakespeare and Beyond, Nineteenth Century British Literature, Twentieth Century Literature, Medieval Literature and World Literature.
Dugan competed in the Twentieth Century category and her paper was entitled: “The Patriarchy in ‘Rosemary’s Baby.’”
Her paper delved into the theme of entrapment into forced motherhood and patriarchy in an androcentric society. Dugan, who is from Wheeling, presented in front of a panel of judges that was made up of professors from both Shepherd and Concord universities.
She competed against students from Fairmont State, Concord University, Shepherd University, and Davis and Elkins College.
Dugan plans on moving to St. Petersburg, Fla. after commencement and plans on working in the book publishing industry.
The College of Liberal Arts includes undergraduate programs in Social Sciences, Social Work, Humanities, and Criminal Justice, as well as a graduate program in Criminology. Humanities students major in English Education, Graphic Narrative, Literature, and/or Writing and Rhetoric. Social Sciences students take majors in History and Geography and Planning. Many students also major in Criminal Justice, Social Work (BSW), and Social Studies Education.
