In order to achieve certification, candidates must submit application and pass a rigorous written examination. The application works on a point system broken down into four categories: education, professional practice, professional performance and service. CFREs also have agreed to uphold Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.

CFRE International offers the only recognized baseline credential for philanthropic fundraising executives and supports fundraising professionals to aspire to the highest standards of professional competence and ethical practice in serving the philanthropic sector. The CFRE credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

Prior to joining West Liberty, she was director of development for Catholic Charities West Virginia of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. Before that, she worked as a marketing researcher for Inclinix, Wilmington, N.C. Early in her professional career, she worked in development at Oglebay Institute, Wheeling.
