WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., Oct. 10, 2022 — West Liberty University students will present the dramatic comedy, “The Dining Room,” as it opens its season this October in Kelly Theater.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 – 15 and 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16.

Written by the American playwright A. R. Gurney, the play was first produced off-Broadway at the Studio Theatre of Playwrights Horizons, in 1981.

Directed by WLU Adjunct Instructor Judith Hennen, the play features 12 actors playing 56 roles, taking the audience through the years spanning from 1930 – 1980.

Set in the family dining room, both amusing and sometimes poignant sketches portray diverse characters in the lifestyle of American families dealing with upper-middle class change.

Hennen explained, “The student actors bring to life 18 brief scenes from different households, all taking place in the dining room, that overlap and intertwine. The scenes provide comedy for everyone’s taste; even a bit of farce as they delightfully make fun of White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASPS).”
