WEST LIBERTY, W.Va., May 5, 2020 — West Liberty University’s Speech Pathology and Audiology students encourage everyone to improve communication by getting the treatment they need for healthy hearing and speech.
“Healthy hearing and positive communication are essential for your everyday life and overall well-being,” said Stephanie Bradley, program director. “We encourage everyone to have their hearing checked annually by a licensed audiologist to prevent communication difficulties in the future.”
WLU’s Bachelor of Science degree program in Speech Pathology and Audiology was established in 1975 and graduated its first class in 1979. The highly successful program is a part of the College of Sciences, one of five colleges and a school of professional studies, housed at WLU.
“Our program is celebrating Better Hearing and Speech Month this May by promoting healthy hearing and positive communication, advocating for current and future clients, and spreading awareness about communication disorders and the profession,” Bradley said.
The program is undergoing the approval process to add a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MS SLP) program, which is expected to accept its first cohort of students in the Fall of 2022.
A 64-credit hour, five semester program, the MS SLP prepares aspiring speech-language pathologists to continue their degree in becoming licensed therapists working with a variety of patient populations and settings.
Just a year ago, in March 2019, the program opened the West Liberty University Speech and Hearing Clinic to the public. Located in the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences, it includes state-of-the-art equipment for hearing evaluations, hearing protection services, and hearing aid cleaning and care.
The clinic is preparing to expand in size, adding speech therapy services with an anticipated opening of those services in spring of 2021.
West Liberty University is a forward-looking, four-year public university steeped in a rich heritage as West Virginia’s oldest institution. Today it offers more than 70 undergraduate majors, plus a growing number of master degree programs.
