The following release was written by student intern Kacie Murray, Lumberport, W.Va., a public relations major.

West Liberty University sorority Beta Rho Epsilon is serving the campus and community by collaborating with the WLU Green Initiative Committee efforts to keep the Hilltop green.

Beta Rho Epsilon members responsible for picking up the recycled items are from left, Sami Blair, Coshocton, Ohio; Kristina Bustamante, Wheeling and Tessa Kandel, Malvern, Ohio.

“The students have been enthusiastic about the recycling project from the very beginning,” said Records Officer Jill Nixon, who works in the Registrar’s Office and acts as advisor to the sorority.

“They’ve all been working very hard to make the green initiative successful and our campus is responding well.” A total of 35 girls belong to the sorority.

Sorority members collecting the recycled material include: students Sami Blair, Coshocton, Ohio; Kristina Bustamante, Wheeling; Tessa Kandel, Malvern, Ohio; President Ashlee Robinson, Wellsburg, W.Va. and Vice President Camille Bernabei, Weirton, W.Va.

Twice a month, sorority members will continue to collect cardboard, aluminum cans and paper products from administrative buildings, Shotwell and Shaw halls, where they have placed containers on each floor of the three story buildings. The recyclables will then be picked up and transported to the recycle shed located just behind the College Union.

From there, the employees of the Wheeling Area Training Center for the Handicapped (WATCH) will transport the materials to the appropriate destinations.

The WLU Green Initiative Committee (GIC) established a general campus-wide recycling program in conjunction with WATCH last spring. The program ran on a volunteer basis for a month to ensure it worked well with office needs.

Now, WATCH members visit campus on a regular basis to pick-up recycled materials free of charge.

“The Beta Rho Epsilon effort at recycling perfectly supports their motto, ‘to build lifelong friendships, have international awareness and scholarship, as well as serve and share with others,’” added Nixon.
