2010 Regional Science & Engineering Fair This Weekend at WLU

March 18, 2010 By Maureen Zambito

The 2010 West Liberty University Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held at West Liberty University’s Arnett Hall on Friday, March 19. Set-up begins at 1:30 p. m., and judging begins at 4:00 p.m. The fair is divided into two divisions: a junior division for students in grades 6-8 and a senior division for students in grades 9-12. An awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 20 at 1p. m.

As the science fair is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering fair, we follow their rules in order to keep the students safe. The rules may be viewed at https://societyforscience.org/Page.aspx?pid=312. This website also contains a rules wizard to help students determine what paperwork is necessary so that all forms can be completed as needed. Some paperwork needs to be submitted and approved by the scientific research committee and/or the human subjects committee at West Liberty University before experimentation, so please be sure to check this information out.

We welcome all students in grades 6-12, whether it is a school-driven project or a research project the student has undertaken on his/her own. The fair is open to students in the counties of Jefferson and Belmont in Ohio and Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel in West Virginia. There is no prerequisite to participate in our fair.

When registering for the science fair, students will choose from the following categories: Behavioral & Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth & Space Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Medicine and Health, Microbiology, Physics, Zoology, or Team Projects. Students compete for prizes within their categories as well as special awards and recognitions. The Grand Prize winner receives a trip to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose California, May 9-15, 2010.

To register for the fair, please visit www.wlscregionalsciencefair.com and register. The site is out-of-date, but the registration is functional.  The registration fee is $10 and can be paid in advance or upon arrival to the fair.

Funding for the Regional Fair is provided by private individuals as well as corporate donors. These funds underwrite the prize monies as well as travel to the International Fair. Additional funding opportunities are available. Interested parties should contact fair director Dr. Melinda Kreisberg at 304-336-8065 or mkreisberg@westliberty.edu

For any further questions, requests for information or assistance, please contact Dr. Kreisberg.
