Real-World Experience

WLU Students in NBC Control Room

Our students are provided with opportunities and instruction that leads to developing critical thinking skills while building real-world oral and written skills within their own unique area of study.

The seven majors and two minors we offer also focus on the unique nature of each area of study by presenting real-life working experiences in an educational setting.

Real-World Skills

With constantly evolving technology, today’s media and communication disciplines are innovative and interdisciplinary. In order to equip our students to meet the future demands of a changing society our experienced and knowledgeable faculty focuses on the practical application, historical study and critical analysis in a variety of disciplines. Faculty prepares our students of today to be the elite communicators and leaders of tomorrow.

Advertising Communication (ADCOM)

West Liberty University’s ADCOM major builds on foundational principles of advertising by introducing best practices in advertising and strategic advertising campaigns. The advertising curriculum is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in account management, media planning, media sales, research and the critical thinking skills needed for advancement to positions of leadership.

Broadcasting

Broadcasting majors study all aspects of television, radio, cable, and web operations in preparation for careers as electronic media professionals. The program emphasizes hands-on learning. All Broadcasting students are encouraged to become involved in WLTV-14 and the student-run radio station, WGLZ-FM.

Communication Studies

The Communication Studies major offers studies in the areas of public address and rhetoric, interpersonal communication, organizational communication and areas associated with human communication behavior including public relations. Students with a concentration in Communication Studies will be required to have a minor.

Documentary Film Internship

Journalism

West Liberty’s Journalism major is designed to give students hands-on experience in print and web journalism. Reporting techniques, interviewing skills, basic and specialized writing, editing and exposure to legal and ethical issues are studied. Our students also write, and produce The Trumpet, WLU’s student newspaper produced in our state-of-the-art journalism computer lab.

Public Relations

West Liberty’s Public Relations major is designed to prepare students for careers in the very broad field of public relations. The curriculum is designed to educate students in theory and research, develop students’ writing, decision-making and strategic thinking abilities. Public Relations professionals fulfill organizational management functions – whether it is for the corporate, government or non-profit sector.

Facilities

The Media Arts Center, a $3.5 million addition, was completed in 2006, and includes the WLTV Television Studio and production areas, several television production and editing labs, a recording studio, music “midi” lab and graphic design studio as well as a mobile production truck. The program also makes use of the WLGZ radio studios and Trumpet newspaper office located in the Student Union.
