The Department of Media and Visual Arts engages students in a variety of ways outside the classroom. This takes the form of field trips, workshops, on-air assignments, gallery events, etc. These are activities outside of required course work. Here are additional highlights:
- The 48 Hour Film Festival: A short filmmaking competition open to WLU students and area high school students. Student teams are given a prompt, genre, line of dialogue and a prop and have 48 hours to complete a 6 to 10 minute film. Cash prizes are awarded at the public screening of all films.
- Extreme Art Night: An all night art event with guest speakers, workshops, music, movies, live models and competitions. The event provides the faculty an opportunity to engage students in a variety of activities and topics in a relaxed fun way. Now in its 18th year.
- Art and Design trips: Art department travel with students ranges from Printmaking residency’s in Poland, Design camp in Korea and museum and architecture studies in Europe
- Monthly gallery openings in the Nutting Gallery located in the Hall of Fine Arts. Artists from around the region display and interact with students. Many of the artists presenting in the gallery also conduct workshops for students, the community and faculty.
- Field trips to Pittsburgh and surrounding areas: Trips to local museums and design firms in Pittsburgh give students and faculty an opportunity to engage professionals in their work environment. Many of the AIGA events take place in the Pittsburgh area.
WLTV 14 | Television

Created in 1990, the community station continues to operate as an educational channel and now reaches more than 55,000 cable households in Hancock, Ohio and Marshall counties on Comcast Cable.
WGLZ | Radio Station
Looking for something fun, exciting and memorable? Look no further than WLU’s own radio station WGLZ.
WGLZ was established in 1992 by Professor Lee and is a student-run organization serving 15,000 listeners in the West Liberty area. The studio, located on the first floor of the College Union, has a daily format that varies according to campus activities, DJ preferences, and campus life. With three paid student positions available to help facilitate operations, the station operates 24 hours a day with on-air announcers from 7 AM – 10 PM and automated programming overnight. In the spring of 2013, Professor Jeff Pfister became the director of operations at WGLZ. The station operates at a power of 150 watts on 91.5 MHz.
