ALUMNI “WALL OF HONOR” The West Liberty University Alumni Board of Directors instituted a project in 1990 to demonstrate to current students, visitors, and friends that the college has some very successful graduates. This project, known as the “Alumni Wall of Honor,” is a dramatic way to honor some of the college’s most distinguished alumni and display pride in the accomplishments of its graduates. The concept was suggested by then Associate Professor of Physics Robert W. Schramm, who is a 1958 graduate of the college and a 2002 Alumni Wall of Honor inductee. The Alumni Wall of Honor is housed in the south end of the Union known as the Alumni Lounge.
Vic Wood
Inducted 2009Vic Wood attended West Liberty State College from 1974-1978, where he earned four letters in football and two letters in track. He was a sprinter on the 1975 WVIAC Track Championship. Wood earned a B.A. in sociology in 1978. After graduation, he served as a W.Va. State Trooper from 1979-1983 stationed in Keyser, W.Va. He entered the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983 and graduated from WVSOM in 1987. Wood interned at Ohio Valley Medical Center from 1987 to 1988.
Wood served as medical director at Doctors Urgent Care in Wheeling W.Va., from 1988-90. He currently serves as the CEO and owner of Doctors Urgent Care since 1990 and is the team physician for West Liberty University athletics.
In 2003, Wood developed Clinic Based Health Care, which is an innovative healthcare model that gives patients access to primary care and urgent care at an affordable cost regardless of pre-existing conditions. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin used Clinic Based Health Care as the centerpiece of his healthcare agenda in the 2006 State of the State Address. Pilot programs were developed throughout the state and now thousands of West Virginians are currently receiving their medical care as a result of this model.
In December 2006, Clinic Based Health Care was featured as the cover story entitled, “Crisis in Healthcare: Does Vic Wood Have the Answer?,” in Medical Economics magazine. This article was chosen as the Best Article for 2006 in Trade Publications. In 2007, Clinic Based Health Care was featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. The Clinic Based Health Care model enjoyed international success. The largest newspaper in Germany, Die Zeit, and Ukraine television ran follow-up stories.
As CEO and owner of Physicians Healthcare Solutions, a North Carolina operation, Wood developed Primary Care One.
