ALUMNI “WALL OF HONOR” The West Liberty University Alumni Board of Directors instituted a project in 1990 to demonstrate to current students, visitors, and friends that the college has some very successful graduates. This project, known as the “Alumni Wall of Honor,” is a dramatic way to honor some of the college’s most distinguished alumni and display pride in the accomplishments of its graduates. The concept was suggested by then Associate Professor of Physics Robert W. Schramm, who is a 1958 graduate of the college and a 2002 Alumni Wall of Honor inductee. The Alumni Wall of Honor is housed in the south end of the Union known as the Alumni Lounge.
Paige Beck
Inducted 2009Paige Beck is a native of Princeton, W.Va., and a graduate of West Liberty State College in 1977. She’s been a member of the WCJB TV20 since 1989, and currently co-anchors WCJB TV20s 5:30 Live, 6 p.m. Report and the 11 p.m. Nightbeat.
Paige is involved in a variety of community projects including Stop Children’s Cancer, and Gainesville Pet Rescue. She bakes one or two cakes a week to donate to local charities. Whether it’s helping someone find a state agency to solve a problem, or calling and emailing viewers, Paige is always giving of her time to benefit North Central Floridians.
Every Monday night at 11 p.m., she hosts a special feature report entitled “Cold Case Files.” It features unsolved murders under investigation by local law enforcement agencies. A supporter of victim’s rights, she has formed a special bond with the families of the victims she reports on.
Beck also did “wall to wall” coverage of hurricanes Charley, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne.
Paige is proud to have anchored the Edward R. Murrow award-winning 5:30-6 p.m. newscast in 2007. She has covered stories ranging from the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery to the execution of serial killer Ted Bundy.
For more than five years she hosted a weekly cooking segment featuring all locally grown products entitled “North Central Florida Flavor.”
Paige also serves as host for the annual Children’s Miracle Network telethon and the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.
As a guest speaker she has lectured to students at the University of Florida, inmates in the Florida State Prison system, students in both private and public schools K-12, Rotary Club, and various senior citizen groups.
Paige was honored as a “Woman Who Makes A Difference” by the Gateway Girl Scout Council and was named an “Outstanding American” by Alachua County’s African American Cultural and Historical Society as well as a Woman of Distinction by Santa Fe College.
