ALUMNI “WALL OF HONOR” The West Liberty University Alumni Board of Directors instituted a project in 1990 to demonstrate to current students, visitors, and friends that the college has some very successful graduates. This project, known as the “Alumni Wall of Honor,” is a dramatic way to honor some of the college’s most distinguished alumni and display pride in the accomplishments of its graduates. The concept was suggested by then Associate Professor of Physics Robert W. Schramm, who is a 1958 graduate of the college and a 2002 Alumni Wall of Honor inductee. The Alumni Wall of Honor is housed in the south end of the Union known as the Alumni Lounge.
Col. (Ret.) Dale Garrett
Inducted 2006Col. (Ret.) Dale Garrett is a 1974 graduate of West Liberty State College, where he won seven letters in football and wrestling, and captained the football squad in his senior season. He once held WLSC rushing records for most yards (278) and most rushes (43) in a single game. Upon graduating from West Liberty, Garrett taught a Real Life Christian Academy, directed a group home for troubled youth, and played semi-pro football with the Tuscarawas County Vikings in the Ohio Football League from 1974 through 1978.
In 1979, Garrett joined the U.S. Air Force, retiring in December 2002 to assume teaching duties in the Social Science Department of Evangel University. Over the course of his Air Force career, Garrett had 3,000 flying hours as a B-52 crewmember, commanded three different squadrons, was awarded the Bronze Star for actions during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, served in the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador and was responsible for developing the newest completely electronic B-52, B-1 and B-2 training range in U.S. air space. Garrett earned his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. Lt Col. Garrett and his wife, Martha, have three grown children, Wendy, 25, Bethany, 23, and Anthony, 22.
