ALUMNI “WALL OF HONOR” The West Liberty University Alumni Board of Directors instituted a project in 1990 to demonstrate to current students, visitors, and friends that the college has some very successful graduates. This project, known as the “Alumni Wall of Honor,” is a dramatic way to honor some of the college’s most distinguished alumni and display pride in the accomplishments of its graduates. The concept was suggested by then Associate Professor of Physics Robert W. Schramm, who is a 1958 graduate of the college and a 2002 Alumni Wall of Honor inductee. The Alumni Wall of Honor is housed in the south end of the Union known as the Alumni Lounge.
Cheryl Anderson
Inducted 2008Cheryl (Mounts) Anderson enjoys a distinguished career as a conductor, soloist, teacher, and clinician. Anderson originally hails from Claysville, Penn., and graduated from West Liberty State College in 1971. She earned her master’s in music education degree from the University of Northern Colorado and her D.M.A. course work is through the University of Cincinnati. She considers West Liberty Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Groups Alfred R. de Jaager her mentor.
Anderson and her husband, John, moved to Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1991. She joined the music faculty at Cabrillo College as Director of Choral Activities. There she conducts three ensembles. She is the founder and artistic director of the Cabrillo Opera and Cabrillo Youth Choir Project. Prior to Cabrillo, she was music director of the Pacific Repertoire Opera; associate director of choral activities at both Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado; and served on the music faculties at Transylvania University, Cumberland College, and UCSC. Anderson also coordinated Eastern Stream Migrant Education.
Cheryl has toured the world guest conducting orchestras and choirs and has performed on all levels of ACDA and MENC in Carnegie Hall, Vatican City, St. Mark’s Cathedral, and other great concert halls and cathedrals. In 2008 she was elected as president of the American Choral Directors, Western Division. Other professional organizations in which she holds membership include the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the International Federation of Choral Musicians. Honors received include Teach of the Year in Virginia Beach; Cabrillo College Meritorious Teaching Award; Cabrillo College Alpha Gamma Sigma Award for Teaching Excellence; and was named Who’s Who in Teaching six times.
