In just his second year as manager, Mark Delbrugge has led Wheeling Post 1 to the history books with a West Virginia State Championship.
Wheeling took the W.Va. championship in dominating fashion, not losing a single game in the tournament. The team scored nine or more runs in all four games totaling 45, while giving up 14 in a run that started in the first round with a 12-2 rout of Elkins.
Wheeling then took it to defending champion Fairmont, 11-5, on Thursday before beating Jefferson 13-2 to head to the championship game. Behind a complete-game gem by West Liberty University pitcher Mario Peroni, Wheeling claimed the championship with a 9-5 victory over South Charleston on Saturday afternoon.
