Joyce Elaine Wheaton-Crowe, 67, of Frostburg, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015.
Born in Steubenville, Ohio, on May 22, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Clark A. Wheaton and Gene (Ruthem) Wheaton. She is preceded in death by a brother, Ronald C. Wheaton.
Joyce was a graduate of Wintersville High School in Ohio and West Liberty College in West Virginia. She received her Ed.D. from West Virginia University. She was a retired Professor of Educational Professions with Emeritus status at Frostburg State University. Joyce taught undergraduate and graduate reading classes for 35 years, was assistant and director of FSU’s Upward Bound program, and assisted with summer orientation and advising of FSU’s Freshman. Joyce was also Director of Elementary Education in the Office of Field Experience. Prior to FSU, she taught first grade for many years in West Virginia. She was a member of educational honoraries Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa. She was Vice President of the Soroptimist Club. Her passion was reading and literature. She held multiple committee memberships and was a book reviewer for the International Reading Association. Joyce was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church and very active with the Chancel Choir, the Bell Choir, and the Helen Lear Women’s Circle.
She is survived by the love of her life and husband, Andy Crowe; son, Brian Azzi and wife, Nora, of Middletown; grandsons, Nicholas and William Azzi; sisters, Leslie Cagot and husband, Jack, of Bloomingdale, Ohio, Marsha Marker and husband, Robert, of Wintersville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Janet Wheaton, of California. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and two special little pups, Mia and Crickett.
