Obituary for Harry Arthur Chorpenning

CHORPENNING, Harry Arthur, 84, of Steubenville, OH, and formerly of Wheeling, WV, passed away on January 2, 2017 at the Valley Hospice North in Steubenville, OH.

He was born on December 1, 1932 in Weirton, WV, the son of the late Arthur R. Chorpenning and Dora Ryder Chorpenning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane Chorpenning in 1994; two sisters, Shirley Carlisle and Betty Wade; a brother, Thomas Chorpenning; and a step-daughter, Linda Dunnigan.

Harry started his education career at Weir High School graduating in 1951. He then attended West Liberty State College and received his undergraduate in 1958. Harry went on to WVU and was awarded his masters degree in 1962, and his administrative degree at WVU in 1972.

Harry had a long and distinguished career in education, he started his teaching career in the Ohio County Schools in 1958; then worked for Linsly Military Institute from the fall of 1958-1972; next he became the headmaster at Linsly and stayed at that position from 1972-1976; after he went on to be the Assistant Dean of Academics at Northern Community College from 1976-1979; Harry then was a Junior High School teacher in Triadelphia from 1979-1985; next he was an Assistant Principal at Triadelphia Junior High School from 1985-1991; Harry finished his education career at Wheeling Park High School from 1991 until retirement.

Harry was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a past member, Elder, and Deacon of the Stone Presbyterian Church, and was currently a member of First Westminister Presbyterian Church in Steubenville, OH. He was a member of the Order of Symposiarchs, Steubenville Chapter, and a past member of the Wheeling Kiwanis Club. He served several terms on the board of the Steubenville Historical Society.

He enjoyed travel, golf, and doing wood carvings.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Wehr Chorpenning; a son, Reverend Gary A. Chorpenning (Meg) of McDonald, PA; a daughter, Dr. Brenda C. Buffington of Columbus, OH; a brother, Russell D. Chorpenning; five grandchildren, Luke, John Buffington, Faith Van Horn (Austin), David Chorpenning, and Grace Chorpenning; two step-sons, Michael Wehr (Sally) and William Wehr (Marilyn); and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 North 4th Street, Steubenville, OH, 43952. Friends will also be received for a memorial visitation on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Stone Presbyterian Church, 25 East Cove Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003, with Rev. Jason Elliott and Rev. Robert Nagy officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the West Alexander Cemetery, West Alexander, PA.
