Emily Young – 1970

Emily Kay Young, 67, of Oxford, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at her home.

She was born in Wheeling, WV on September 16, 1948, daughter of the late Elwood Melvin Goddard and Mildred Mae Ebright.

Kay spent her childhood in Bethlehem, WV, a Wheeling suburb. She attended schools there and graduated from West Liberty University in 1970. In that same year, Kay and her best friend accepted teaching positions in Talbot County, Maryland.

Kay taught at elementary schools in Easton, Tilghman and Trappe until her retirement as a master teacher in 2002.

Emily Kay loved teaching, but took time off to be with her sons, James and Jonathan, until they started school.

Kay was also a life member of Oxford Volunteer Fire Co. Inc. and its auxiliary where she served as an emergency medical technician, ambulance captain and crew member. Kay was among the first women to serve as active members of volunteer fire companies in Talbot County. Emily Kay answered calls for over 30 years until her illness forced her to retire.

Aside from the fire company, Kay’s pleasures were her children, friends, small animals to feed and care for, antiques and all children, especially her grandchildren Owen and Farrah, and grandniece Lydia. Emily Kay’s boundless enthusiasm for life was infectious. She seemed to make the work of life fun anywhere she went.

Kay is survived by her husband of 44 years, Michael James Young of Oxford; two sons, James T. Young and Jonathan M. Young; a brother, Jack Goddard and numerous nieces and nephews.
