KIGER, Donald Howard “Legs”, 85, of Wheeling, WV passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Liza’s Place, Wheeling, WV.
He was born June 28, 1929 in Wheeling, WV, son of the late George and Mary Evelyn Hanket Kiger.
Mr. Kiger was a graduate of Triadelphia High School where he played basketball and where he got his nickname “Legs”. While at West Liberty State College, he was a member of the basketball team whose 22-6 record earned them a berth in the National Championship. He was inducted into the West Liberty Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, and was named one of the top 20 athletes at West Liberty in 2001.
Upon graduation from West Liberty, he joined the United States Navy and went to Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island and then served on the USS Ajax. He continued his military career with the Naval Reserve where he was a commanding officer.
He married his future wife, Martha on July 28, 1952. He was an avid golfer as late as last spring.
Mr. Kiger was the retired plant manager at the former Wheeling Machine Products. He was Presbyterian by faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jane Hallett Kiger in 2013 and a daughter, Molly Coulling.
Surviving are three daughters, Chris Harden and her husband, Rev. Homer Harden of St. Clairsville, OH, Mindy Cheval and her husband, David of Boulder, CO, and Amy Grant and her husband, Jim of Belfast, ME; six grandchildren, Abby Vopal (James); Emily and Katie Harden; Zoe Grant; and Caroline and Grace Cheval; three great-grandchildren, Sophia and Fletcher Vopal, and Jesse Lowe.
