Bernard (Bernie) Handlan Bachmann, 90, of Wheeling died Monday July 18, 2016. He was born May 13, 1926 in Wheeling, WV, son of the late Howard Francis Bachmann and Helen Minnie (Venskoske) Bachmann.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Bachmann Riggs and a grandson, Roger Ray Shinsky.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alice Benner Bachmann, children Gail Lohr of Tennessee, Joyce Sizemore of Wheeling, Bernie Bachmann (Caren) of Pennsylvania and Susan Bachmann of Wheeling, four grandchildren (Rich, Nanette, Jerry, Ben) and five great-grandchildren (Ryan, Rachel, Isaac, Sophia, Aaron).
He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1944. He proudly served with the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific. He worked for the City of Wheeling Police Department for 26 years as a policeman and in the detective division.
Bernie also owned and operated Bachmann Vending, Restaurant, and Catering in South Wheeling. He was well-known for his excellent food –especially his pepperoni rolls which were very popular throughout the Ohio Valley.
