Andy McKenzie – 1998

The West Virginia Municipal League has named Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie its 2015 Mayor of the Year, but McKenzie said the honor really belongs to hundreds of others as much as it does to him.

McKenzie received the award during the Municipal League’s summer conference, held this past week at Oglebay Park. He said he was “humbled and honored” to be selected, noting it was even more special to receive the award while Wheeling hosted the conference, which brought together more than 300 city officials from all over West Virginia.

McKenzie credited the many residents who are working to effect positive change in Wheeling, as well as the city employees who do their jobs effectively day in and day out.

McKenzie, who also took over as president of the Municipal League on Thursday, is the first Wheeling official to receive the Mayor of the Year honor since the league began awarding it in 1988.

McKenzie’s alma mater, West Liberty University, also got in on the praise following the announcement of the award.

“We congratulate Mayor McKenzie and are proud to claim him as one of our illustrious alumni. Andy has carried our WLU flag as a highly effective state senator, as a successful investment professional and now as the mayor of Wheeling,” said John McCullough, WLU’s interim president.
