WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. —Nearly 100 students from Wheeling Park High School visited West Liberty University on Thursday, Oct. 22, as part of Level Up, West Virginia’s statewide dual enrollment initiative, connecting high school students with university faculty, campus resources, and academic opportunities as they begin their college journeys.

Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college-level courses and earn college credit while still working toward their high school diplomas. Through initiatives such as Level Up, students can explore potential career pathways, experience college academics, and get a head start on their postsecondary education.

During their visit, students were welcomed by WLU President Dr. Tim Borchers, met with admissions staff, and learned about academic support services available through the university’s Student Success Center. They also enjoyed lunch on campus and connected with faculty advisors in their respective academic pathways, including business, health sciences, teaching, nursing, and social services.

“Providing students with opportunities to experience college while they are still in high school is an important part of expanding access to higher education,” said Dr. Tim Borchers, President of West Liberty University. “We want these students to feel welcomed, supported, and confident as they explore their academic interests and future career goals. By introducing them to our campus community early, we can help them build a strong foundation for success.”

As part of the visit, students received West Liberty University student IDs, reinforcing their connection to the university beyond the classroom. Although they are still completing high school, dual enrollment students have access to many of the same resources and experiences available to other WLU students.

These opportunities may include tutoring and academic support, participation in student activities and campus events, free admission to Hilltopper athletic events, and access to select concerts and theater productions. Students can also begin building relationships with faculty and staff, become familiar with campus services, and experience university life before graduating from high school.

“Visits like this give students the chance to see themselves as part of a college community while they are still in high school,” said Michelle Panepucci, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management. “We want our dual enrollment students to know that they are part of West Liberty and that we are here to support their success. Connecting them with faculty, staff, and campus resources helps them make the most of their college experience.”

The visit also introduced students to the support available through WLU’s Student Success Center, which helps students navigate their academic journeys and connect with resources designed to support their personal and educational development.

“Student success begins with making sure students know where to turn for guidance, encouragement, and support,” said Andrew Lewis, Associate Vice President of Student Success and Engagement. “Our goal is to help dual enrollment students feel connected to West Liberty from the beginning, giving them access to resources and experiences that will help them succeed both now and as they continue their education.”

West Liberty University’s participation in dual enrollment reflects its ongoing commitment to expanding educational opportunities and creating accessible pathways to higher education. By connecting high school students with university faculty, support services, and campus life, WLU aims to make the transition from high school to college more familiar and attainable.
