WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Veterans Lounge with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Oct. 16, bringing together student veterans, university leadership, alumni, and community supporters.

The renovated lounge provides a welcoming space for veterans and military-connected students to relax, study, connect with one another, and build relationships through shared experiences. The project reflects WLU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment for those who have served in the military and their families.

The renovations were fully funded by West Liberty University alumni and U.S. Navy veterans Denise and Karl Penz, whose generosity helped transform the lounge into a dedicated space for the university’s military-connected community. Karl Penz also contributed his time and artistic talents over the summer, painting a mural inside the lounge.

“I would like everyone to know how important this space is to us, not just because we are veterans or because I am an alum, but because our veterans deserve a place of their own. They deserve a space that recognizes their service, honors their sacrifice, and provides a sense of belonging. A place where they can find peace, connect with others who understand their experiences, and feel supported as they pursue their educational goals,” said Denise Penz.

“We are honored to support this space and grateful to you for making this possible. This is connection with our scholarship and your fund for other educational support will make a big difference,” Penz added.

Lisa McGee, Chair of the Veterans Support Council, and her husband, Zack McGee, also dedicated significant time and effort to creating a space that student veterans would enjoy. Together, they contributed to and created a patch wall, adding a personal element that reflects military service and shared identity.

“This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when alumni, donors, and community members come together to support our student veterans,” said Lisa McGee. “We are proud to provide a dedicated space where veterans can find connection, support, and a sense of belonging on campus.”

Student veterans Bryant Anderson and Brandon Miller participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official opening of the renovated lounge.

The ceremony was attended by West Liberty University President Dr. Tim Borchers, West Virginia Sen. Ryan Weld, Delegate Willis, representatives of American Legion Post 1, and Michael Novotney, a representative of the Vet Center. American Legion representatives included Deputy Commander John Powell and Post 1 Auxiliary Unit President Michelle Powell.

Members of the Veterans Support Council, including Sherry Theaker, Kate Billings, Brad Forshey, James Temple, Ronald Williams, Jason Metz, Laura Willis, Patrick Kelly, and Whitney Merinar, also contributed to the initiative.

The newly renovated Veterans Lounge stands as a reflection of the university’s ongoing commitment to honoring military service and providing student veterans with the resources, community, and support they need to succeed.
