Students who have an interest in pursuing a career in one of the many business segments related to business/pleasure travel, tourism promotion, event management, or lodging/resort management should consider specializing in Tourism and Event Management (TEM).

Job opportunities can be found in

  • State Divisions of Tourism
  • Convention and Visitors Bureaus
  • Meeting, Event, and Wedding Planning
  • Festivals, Fairs, and Exhibits
  • Theme Parks/Water Parks
  • Casinos
  • Cruise Ships
  • Resorts/Hotels
  • Restaurants and Institutional Food Service Providers
  • Sports and Entertainment Venues
  • Historic Sites
  • State and National Parks
  • Museums

Management of these organizations involves every facet of business, from marketing to finance to customer service and supervision. The core classes you’ll take for the B.S.B.A. give you all the basic business courses, and the additional specialization courses expose you to the many unique and exciting challenges of managing for exceptional guest service.

TEM students must complete an approved field internship prior to graduation, giving them a distinct edge in the job market.  Recent internship placements have included Hyatt International, Darden/Red Lobster, Hampton Inn, Big City Bride (Chicago), Oglebay Resort, Grand Vue Park, Wheeling Convention & Visitors Bureau/WesBanco Arena, and Wheeling Island Casino and Racetrack.

Liberty Oaks Bed & Breakfast

Unique on-campus paid internships are also available in lodging management at the university’s own Liberty Oaks Bed & Breakfast, and in event planning through the WLU Office of Institutional Advancement.  The university’s dining services vendor, Sodexo, also offers internships in food service.

Our beautiful B&B is the restored home of former college presidents and features four beautifully appointed guest rooms, as well as a conference room for small meetings.  HTM interns staff the B&B, which is busy year-round with alumni, university guests, and the general public.

Event planning interns in the Office of Institutional Advancement learn all facets of organizing events large and small, from intimate parties for our benefactors to major fundraising galas for hundreds of participants.
