WLU tailback Ortiz joins elite status

No. 21 for the Black and Gold, Jeremiah Ortiz, made West Liberty history last night by becoming only the ninth Hilltopper in school history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. However, Ortiz’ record-setting performance wasn’t enough to prevail the Hilltoppers over Fairmont State.

WLU football prepares for season finale at Fairmont

Coming off of a disappointing loss last Thursday to an out of conference Eastern New Mexico University team, by a score of 24-45, the Hilltoppers will travel to Fairmont, W.Va. tonight to take on Fairmont State University. This Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff. West Liberty enters the final week of the season with a 3-7 record, whereas the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons enter in third place in the MEC, with a 7-3 record. 

WLU faces tough out-of-conference test at home

Tonight, the football team (3-6, 3-6 MEC) will host the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds (7-1, 6-1 LSC) at West Family Stadium. Losing five-straight games before last week’s win against Concord, the Toppers are hoping to salvage their season with wins in their final two games, but the Greyhounds are traveling nearly 1,500 miles to spoil that hope. 

West Liberty rolls Concord on senior day

It was a cold and rainy one on the Hilltop for senior day, as West Liberty University took on the Concord Mountain Lions in a Mountain East Conference match-up. The Hilltoppers came away with a huge 44-14 victory to improve to 3-6 on the season.

West Liberty hopes to end losing streak this weekend

The West Liberty football team will be back in action this Saturday against Concord University at West Family Stadium, for a scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff. West Liberty and Concord come into the game with identical 2-6 records and the Hilltoppers are currently on a five game losing streak that they will be looking to snap. This is the longest losing streak that the Toppers have been on since the 2013 season. West Liberty is 2-5 against the Mountain Lions since the 2010 season, with the last win coming in the 2015 season. 

Hilltopper football set to bounce back against Charleston

The Hilltoppers’ football team has started off their season with one win and one loss. Losing 34-0 on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan was a setback for the Hilltoppers. Putting themselves in a deep hole in the first quarter, the Hilltoppers went down 0-20 with Wesleyan scoring three touchdowns. One of the touchdowns was an impressive blocked punt, which was recovered by Anthony Robinson in the end zone. 

Hilltopper football travels to Buckhannon for MEC battle

Coming off of a huge opening night win against Urbana University last Thursday, the football team will be back in action Saturday afternoon against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The game will start in Buckhannon at 1 p.m., in a battle between 1-0 teams. 

Hilltopper football ready to kick off new season

Sports are a large part of the community up here on the hilltop, one of these being football. Attracting crowds of locals, students and staff, it brings everyone together for a social event and entertaining competition. The West Liberty football team is looking forward to a successful season, hoping to improve from last year’s record of four wins and seven losses.

West Liberty Mounts the Comeback over West Virginia State

The West Liberty Hilltoppers come back after losing the entire game to defeat West Virginia State 42-36. The Hilltoppers ended their season with a record of 5-6. In the conference they went 5-5. West Virginia State’s season ends at 5-6 as well. 13 seniors will say goodbye as they played their last game ever as a Hilltopper.

West Liberty Loses in A Washout At West Family Stadium

West Liberty took a tough loss to Notre Dame by a final score 59-51 at West Family Stadium Thursday night. The Hilltoppers fall to an even rank of 4-4 on the year as Notre Dame advances to 3-5 on the season. West Liberty was down 38-10 at halftime, and they came back all the way to tie it up 38-38 early in the fourth quarter. After that, it was just even offense on both sides of the ball. Notre Dame prevailed though with their first away victory of the year.
