Lady Toppers hope to end season on high note

In Kyle Cooper’s first season as head coach of the West Liberty women’s basketball team, Coach Cooper returned the Lady Toppers to winning form. With the Mountain East Conference Tournament fast-approaching, WLU will look to end the season with a win.

One of the seniors out on the court for the Running Hilltoppers this year is Brandon Smith. Originally from Sandusky, Ohio, Smith’s love for sports started at a young age. So young, in fact, his first word was “ball.”

Toppers ready for week of key Mountain East match-ups

With the regular season quickly coming to a close and the Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament in Charleston awaiting teams at the end of the month, every game becomes important for seeding in the tournament.
 
For West Liberty’s men’s basketball team, this is certainly the case as picking up both wins this week, one on the road and one at home, can guarantee the Toppers the MEC Regular Season Championship and a No. 1 seed come tournament time.

McKenna Shives stands out on and off the court

A senior from Struthers, Ohio, McKenna Shives is no average basketball player. This is her second and final season here at West Liberty University. She transferred from Gannon University, where she played her first two collegiate seasons. In her junior year, she led the nation with 106 3-pointers and earned second team All-MEC honors

Toppers take on Fairmont in their 173rd meeting

The West Liberty University men’s basketball team will travel this weekend to Fairmont, W.Va. to take on the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match-up.
 
As of Jan. 21, the Hilltoppers are sporting a 17-0 overall record and a 12-0 record in conference games, and the Falcons have a 14-4 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference games, with their losses coming against West Virginia State and the Hilltoppers earlier in the season by a score of 100-106.

Hilltoppers remain undefeated after late game scare

The West Liberty University men’s basketball avoided their first loss of the season after escaping a late comeback by the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State. Our Hilltoppers pulled out a 106-100 victory, still preserving their perfect season on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the ASRC.

WLU basketball hits the road for MEC tournament

This last weekend saw the regular seasons of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball teams end in a heartbreak to rivals Wheeling Jesuit. One was at the hands of a buzzer-beating layup, and the other was a triple-overtime thriller at the free-throw line.
 
While this certainly isn’t the way the Toppers wanted to see their regular season end, the season is far from over for either of them as they both move on to post-season play in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament and beyond.
