WLU welcomes Dianna Vargo as graduation speaker

The Spring Commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 in the Academic, Sports and Recreational Complex (ASRC) at 11 a.m. Ohio County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dianna Vargo will deliver the commencement address

Vargo is a resident of Wheeling, W. Va., and is an Ohio University alumna. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Mathematics at Ohio University in 1981, a Masters of Arts in Science/Mathematics Education from Wheeling Jesuit College in 1987, a Master of Arts in Education Administration from West Virginia University in 1993, and a Doctoral in Educational Leadership from West Virginia University in 2009.

In 1983, Vargo was a math teacher and a cross-country coach at Wheeling Park High School.  She later became an assistant principal and was named the Principal of Wheeling Park High School in 2001. After serving as the principal for four years, she then served as Assistant Superintendent of Ohio County Schools until the summer of 2009. That summer, she was appointed the Deputy Superintendent of Ohio County Schools.

In 2001, Dr. Vargo joined the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) as an Executive Board member and in 2007 she assumed the role of the OVAC president. Along with serving on the OVAC Executive Board, Vargo serves on the Easter Seals Board, Wheeling Hall of Fame Committee, and the Wheeling YMCA Board of Directors.

The ceremony will be directed by WLU President Dr. Stephen Greiner, and he will present Dr. Vargo with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree.

“It is an honor to welcome Dr. Vargo as our commencement speaker,” Greiner said. “I thank her personally for taking the time from her busy schedule to address our graduates, their families and friends and all our honored guests.”

A reception for graduates, guests and families will be held in the College Union immediately following the ceremony. Parking will be available for guests behind the ASRC.
