Training Opportunity for Pre-Professionals, Educators, and Researchers
Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Interested in TOPPER-SURE?
As a science student, participating in undergraduate research can provide you with valuable learning experiences which are difficult to obtain during a regular semester. Often, you are too busy with classes, studying, and work to truly engage in a research experience where you are able to design your own research project with a faculty mentor. The faculty of West Liberty’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics are looking for enthusiastic students ready to participate in a summer experience that aims to be both academically challenging and socially fulfilling, as you learn from and interact with your research group, your mentor, and the other SURE participants.
The SURE program will run for 9 weeks between May 22-July 21, 2017 and is open to twelve students from West Liberty University and other institutions across the state. You will receive a $3000.00 stipend and there is additional funding available for housing for those interested. Four project areas will be available for you to choose from, each having its own faculty mentor. Briefly, the project areas include microbial pathogenesis, crayfish biodiversity, skull morphometrics, and environmental chemistry. Two to four students will be involved in each project area, so be sure to note the research project you are most interested in on your application materials. As a SURE participant YOU are the researcher, as you will be given ownership of specific projects, you will be conducting the research, and you will be involved in the decision–making process associated with your research. As the projects are open-ended, the opportunity to extend the research into the academic year is a viable option that SURE faculty mentors have exercised in previous years. As a SURE participant, you will present your findings at the WLU SURE symposium and at other venues throughout the state, country, and internationally.
