On behalf of the Student Government Association and the student body, it is with great excitement and honor that I welcome you to the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of West Virginia: West Liberty University. Along with Student Government Vice-President David Cullinan, Secretary Chelsea Williams, Director of Programming Adam Croasmun, and Treasurer Lynnsie Parsons, we are extremely humbled and optimistic to serve as the collective leading voice of the student body here at WLU. Without a doubt, West Liberty is home to some of the greatest intellect and talent that the state of West Virginia has to offer. Looking back at our remarkable history, West Liberty has helped to produce some very notable individuals, including country musician Brad Paisley and WV Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kessler. History is and has always been an important element when speaking of West Liberty University. However, we believe that the future is just as important as the past, and that is why we are very excited to welcome you to the Hilltopper family, and welcome you to your future!
Last year, West Liberty changed in more ways than one. At the height of adversity, West Liberty welcomed Dr. Stephen Greiner as the new President. Bringing a new vision and new ideas to WLU, President Greiner has proven to be the change that West Liberty greatly needed. Just a few months later, I was honored to have been elected WLU’s new Student Government President as only a second-semester freshman. Without question, this is an exciting time for West Liberty, as we welcome fresh ideas and new faces to the hilltop. As your Student Government President, I view it as my responsibility to re-vitalize our Student Government as well as serve as a strong voice for our student body. It is the students who make West Liberty such a successful university, and we as a Student Government will give nothing less than our best in fulfilling your desires and keeping your best interests at heart.
As previously mentioned, West Liberty is no stranger to victory, but rather the home of success. Our Dental Hygiene Program and our Men’s and Women’s basketball programs are proof of our nationwide accomplishments. Even more excitingly, West Liberty has been named the 99th best school in the nation (and 1st in West Virginia) for scholarships made available to students. Our Student Government takes pride in the fact that West Liberty is the most affordable university in the state, and we will collectively continue to serve as a voice for our financial successes. Though West Liberty may be located off the beaten path, West Liberty is right in the middle of achieving success.
Part of Student Government’s goal for the 2016-17 academic school year is to give a voice back to the student body. We want our students to be informed on as much information as possible, and we’d love to hear your feedback. After all, it is the STUDENTS that we serve on Student Government, and your opinion is just as important as ours. Last year was an exciting year for West Liberty as a whole, and we are looking forward to continuing that success and excitement into the 2016-17 school year. This is a new era for West Liberty University, and your Student Government is excited and honored to guide you towards success. Though some things may change for the better at West Liberty, some things will continue to stay the same. We have strong traditions here on the Hilltop. And no matter what, Hilltoppers always have each other’s backs. So welcome to West Liberty, and best wishes as you begin your adventure on the hilltop.
Welcome to your future.
David R. Boden, West Liberty University Student Government President, 2016-17
