From September 10-13, 2012 more than 30 West Liberty University students from the Department of Health and Human Performance within the College of Education participated in SPARK Professional Development workshops focused on increasing physical activity in physical education.
Mr. Greg Haberfield, the Buckeye Local School District PEP Grant Coordinator, secured a grant for the school district to provide SPARK Training to its teachers and materials to supplement the trainings. Mr. Haberfield invited local colleges and universities to the trainings in an effort to promote SPARK PE which is centered on non-competitive activities that increase the amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity that students engage in while in Physical Education class and throughout the day in the regular classroom.
WLU Instructors of Physical Education, Kathleen Wack, Cathy Monteroso, and Aaron Huffman each participated, accompanied, and/or transported students to the event on various days.
The week was divided into four full days of grade-specific training. September 10 focused on kindergarten-2nd grade, September 11 focused on grades 3-6, September 12 focused on middle school, and September 13 focused on high school.
