Recruitment
Energy Express is in the process of recruiting members for the summer of 2013. Energy Express is an 8-week AmeriCorps summer reading program promoting the school success of West Virginia children living in rural and low-income communities. Energy Express is currently recruiting more than 500 AmeriCorps members to serve as mentors and community coordinators this summer in 80 sites throughout West Virginia. AmeriCorps members serving as mentors and community coordinators must be available to continuously serve from June 13 through August 2, 2013 and be at least 18 years of age by June 13, 2012.
Positions
Mentors must also be a college-bound high school senior, a current college student, or a recent college graduate with no full-time employment. Mentors make learning fun for small groups of school-age children by creating a safe, enriching environment focused on reading, writing, art and drama. Mentors also lead non-competitive recreation and two nutritional family style meals. Community coordinators connect parents and community members to the Energy Express site by recruiting, training and supervise community and teen volunteers who help with various site activities.
Benefits
In serving 300 hours over the summer, Energy Express AmeriCorps members will earn a living allowance of $1,850 and an Education Award of $1,175 valid for up to seven years to pay for college tuition or loans. Individuals serving as an AmeriCorps member who are 55 years of age or older are now able to transfer their Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to their children, grandchildren, and foster children. The transfer award must be used within 10 years.
