‘We are working hard to provide the tools necessary to encourage any entrepreneur wishing to take creative ideas to the marketplace. Intellectual Capitol has the resources and we want to make building small businesses in our area as easy and as successful as possible,” said Dr. Carrie White, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship.

The program will be held from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Feb. 6, at the Intellectual Capitol, located in the First State Capitol, 1413 Eoff Street, Wheeling.

This agenda that day will offer all the essentials for a business startup and will host experts in the field of business, law, social media, marketing and accounting in order to answer questions first hand.

Following the program there will be a Mardi Gras-themed celebration and after party with hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and special music and entertainment.

“This is a great chance to meet experts and network too. We want to encourage entrepreneurs and help them build relationships that make them successful,” White said.

The cost of the daylong program is $99 and includes the after party. Tickets for the after party only will be available for $10. Special rates are available for students.

Please contact White for tickets and information at 304-336-8159 or [email protected].

West Liberty University’s Center for Entrepreneurship, a division of the Gary E. West College of Business, consists of three areas of opportunity for study and community outreach: a dynamic entrepreneurship curriculum, the Small and Family Business Program (SFBP) and the Intellectual Property and Innovation (IPI) Program.

Intellectual Capitol began its work last August and builds on the vision of attorney Patrick Cassidy, who along with his wife, educator Mary Ellen Cassidy, founded Wheeling Academy of Law and Science and the WALS Foundation over a decade ago.

March 20, 2013 – The Entrepreneurs Pitch Contest

Entrepreneur Pitch contestants

The Entrepreneur’s Pitch Contest took place at the Capitol Theatre Ballroom in Wheeling, Thursday evening March 20.   It was an event sponsored by the Gary E. West College of Business and the Center for Entrepreneurship at West Liberty University.  The event began with a cocktail hour with hors d’oevres and then a keynote speaker Eric Corl, founder and president of Fundable.com explaining the opportunities of crowdfunding .  The audience members engaged in an active Q & A session with Eric and many later stated that they learned so much about a relatively new entrepreneurship funding opportunity such as crowdfunding.

The pitch contest began at 7:00 and was similar to the SHARK TANK television program, although instead of designated investors, the entire audience could ask follow-up questions. Local entrepreneurs and small business owners were given 5 minutes to pitch their business to the audience.  The audience was given an opportunity to ask questions about the business and then the audience voted for the best concept.   The entrepreneur with the most votes was awarded a $2,550 cash award from sponsors including The Forever Hilltoppers, the Regional Economic Development Partners, Vision Shared and the Weirton Rotary Club.  At the end of the event, attendees could also contribute to any entrepreneur if they so wished. All financial assistance provided is administered by the West Liberty University Foundation account for Entrepreneurship.

The participants in the Pitch contest included: Matthew Moon, Trey Santorine, Kathy Glover, Hugo Andreini, David Seum and Alexandra Mendoza.  David Seum took home the grand prize to help with his local small business, Sunset Recycling Consultants.

The event was a wonderful way to promote and support startup businesses and entrepreneurs and will become a series of pitch contests in the future!
